The Fox Theatre won't be running on empty with performers like Jackson Browne, George Thorogood and Bill Cosby gracing its stage this year.
The downtown Redwood City theater announced its new lineup yesterday - including everything from German opera to an international stand up comedy competition.
"I am convinced that the times arc perfect for the Redwood City to emerge as a prime entertainment destination point for people throughout the Bay Area." Fox co-owner John Anagnostou told dozens gathered at the theater yesterday to get the latest on the Winter-Spring 2002 "Live at the Fox" lineup.
Last month, Melissa Etheridge, Better than Ezra and Luce played a sold-out show at the theater, which many believe it) be the first step in waking a sleepy downtown Redwood City.
"Me Fox is helping to bring a new sense of community to downtown and is becoming a focal point for downtown entertainment," Vice Mayor Jeff In said.
Some highlights of the new year include- funnymen Tim Conway and Harvey Kormen on Feb. I die Miss Redwood City Scholarship Pageant on Feb. 10 and Jackson Browne on Feb. 27 - the 100th anniversary of John Steinbeck's birthday and a fundraiser for the Center for Steinbeck Studies at San Jose State.
Other acts stated for the Fox include rock legend George Thorogood on March 17; Mercedes Sosa, known as the "voice of Latin America," on April 12; flamenco guitarist Ottmar Liebert on May 19; comedian Bill Cosby on Sept. 7. and the San Francisco Comedy Competition Finals on Oct. 12. Classical music and ballet lovers also have options: the Bay Shore Lyric Opera Company is doing Johann Strauss' Die Flederhmaus on April 6,13, and 14; on April 20 and 2 1. Peninsula Ballet Theatre is performing Carmina Burana.
The Peninsula Symphony is testing out the refurbished 1929 theater on Tuesday to see if the space would work as a possible future venue.

The 1929 vaudeville and movie palace was brought back to life by owners Mike Monte and Anagnostou, who spent three years and millions of dollars returning the 1,400-seat theater to its Art Deco and Spanish Moorish Gothic styles.
The theater opened as a vaudeville house and a movie theater on January 5,1929, originally called The New Sequoia Theatre.
In 1993, the theater was placed on the National Register of Historic Places.
