REDWOOD CITY'S FOX THEATRE ANNOUNCES UP-COMING THEATRICAL LINE-UP
Sandie Wernick
Imtech Communications - (415) 928-7414 or (415) 350-9115
(Redwood City, CA, October 31, 2001) - Redwood City's Fox Theatre, the last of the classic single-screen movie palaces that once anchored virtually every community's downtown on the Peninsula, announces its Winter/Spring 2001-2002 "Live at the Fox " performances at a press conference at the Fox Theatre on November 7th at 10:30 a.m.
According to John Anagnostou, co-owner of the Fox Theatre, "We are very excited to announce our upcoming season of events which we believe complete a 73-year dream of the original owner, Ellis John Arkush, who had expectations of bringing the Theatre to its full glory. Our dream is to make the Fox Theatre not only a place to enjoy live performances and films, but an opportunity for everyone to experience its unique historic grandeur."
The Fox Theatre offers a multi-purpose venue for live performances, family-friendly entertainment, cultural arts and musicals and corporate and community meetings. "The Fox Theatre will be the center of entertainment for the Peninsula," states Anagnostou. "You will no longer have to go to San Francisco or San Jose to enjoy 'class act' live entertainment and film performances," he concludes.
Some highlights of the upcoming line-up for the balance of 2001 and Spring 2002 include a concert by Dark Star Orchestra and Big Brother and the Holding Company by the Wheel Company on November 17, 2001; The Nutcracker by the Peninsula Ballet Theatre on December 7th and 8th, 2001; and a concert by Melissa Etheridge, Better Than Ezra, and Luce, presented by KFOG Radio on December 12, 2001. In 2002, the Miss Redwood City Scholarship Competition will take place February 10th.
The Fox Theatre has established a partnership with Montalvo, a 50-year-old Saratoga nonprofit organization that presents about 200 shows in the South Bay. Montalvo has lined up performances such as Aladdin, which will be presented on November 18, 2001; A Christmas Carol on Sunday, December 9th; David Sedaris on October 18, 2001; Tim Conway and Harvey Korman on February 3, 2002; and the Vienna Choir Boys on November 1, 2002. Just announced for 2003 by Montalvo are Itzak Perlman on January 8, 2003 and the Boys Choir of Harlem in February 2003. Recent well-known performers brought to the Fox Theatre by Montalvo were Keb Mo, Tom Jones, Dave Brubeck, David Benoit and Taylor Eigsti.
Finally, Pacific Film Resources will also offer at the Fox Theatre two film showcases under the auspices of the Revival Classics, which features Classical American movies and Peninsula Premieres, which features independent and foreign films. "We are very excited to present these two new showcase presentations," says Anagnostou. "Of special note," he adds, "we have learned that most of the Charlie Chaplin titles, such as City Lights, Modern Times and Circus, will be reverting to the Chaplin family at the end of the year, and may be unavailable for showing in the near future. Under the Peninsula Premieres imprimatur, this may be the last chance for the general public to see Chaplin's work on the big screen, and we are honored to be able to present them at the Fox Theatre."
The films included in the Revival Classics are family oriented, and includes such musicals as The Wizard of OZ, Singing in the Rain and Meet Me in St. Louis, as well as old-fashioned action films including The Adventures of Robin Hood, the Mark of Zorro and The Crimson Pirate. All-time audience choices or critical favorites include Casablanca, Citizen Kane, North by Northwest, Philadelphia Story and Some Like It Hot. Special event production would include silent films with live accompaniment, the Sound of Music Sing-a-Long and specially selected in-person tributes (to be announced later).
Located at 2215 Broadway in downtown Redwood City, this 1400-seat theatre is convenient to several nearby parking facilities. For more information, visit the Fox Theatre website at www.foxdream.com or call (650) 369-4119.
