Owners of the Fox Theatre in Redwood City announced a diverse lineup of entertainment for the winter season at the recently restored 1929 vaudeville and movie palace.
"Redwood City used to be the place to go to" during the theater's golden days, says owner John Anagnostou. "Now, we're bringing everyone back."
The mark of a true multipurpose entertainment venue lies in the quality and diversity of its offerings. In this area, the Fox Theatre's first season of live and cinematic events is as diverse as its plush state-of-the-art facilities.
Anagnostou and partner Mike Monte have courted Bay Area performing arts organizations, such as Montalvo, KFOG radio and the Peninsula Ballet Theatre, to bring theater, music and movies to the Fox, which Anagnostou calls "the West Coast's Carnegie Hall."
Many of these organizations, along with the city's Mayor Ira Ruskin, showed up to help owner Anagnostou announce the lineup of upcoming events, at a news conference Wednesday at the theater.
"Welcome to downtown Redwood City" said Ruskin, who praised the "vision for the Fox Theatre that intertwines with the vision for Redwood City. . . . What a great, brilliant season this all promises to produce."
The well-attended press conference was treated to a sample of upcoming events with a dance performance from "The Nutcracker" by the Peninsula Ballet Theatre and a performance by jazz pianist Taylor Eigsti.
Among the highlights of "Live at the Fox" winter-spring 2001-2002 season is a concert with Dark Star and Big Brother & the Holding Company on Nov. 17.
The lineup also features Melissa Etheridge in concert, a comedy show with Tim Conway and Harvey Korman, and American Family Theatre's "Aladdin" and "A Christmas Carol" presented by Montalvo. The Miss Redwood City Scholarship Competition takes place Feb. 10.
Upcoming seasons will include the Vienna Boys Choir, the Boys Choir of Harlem and Itzhak Perlman.
The theater also will also present two film series by Pacific Film Resources. "Peninsula Premiers" will show independent and foreign films. And "Revival Classics" will feature classic American movies, such as "Singin' in the Rain," "The Wizard of Oz," "The Mark of Zorro" and "The Adventures of Robin Hood."
Where Bob Hope and Al Jolson once graced the stage, patrons now have Internet access and a sound system being developed by Meyer Sound Laboratories.
