It’s not easy being as talented as these artists are. Not only are they brilliant musicians, but they are also multi-lingual! It is fortunate for the Bay Area music scene that the best language that they speak is Music. Who are these miraculous musical aficionados? Ah, we thought you’d never ask. They are Ed Johnson and Novo Tempo, Kristen Strom and Jennifer Scott with their group Crossing Borders and Masha Campagne & Caminhos Cruzados. This wonderful triple header will feature each band performing a forty minute set.

Sunday Jazz at the Little Fox welcomes back headliner Ed Johnson and Novo Tempo back to kick off our third season. We are privileged to have this wonderful singer/composer/guitarist and master of the Brazilian beat back in our neighborhood again. Hey, don’t take our word for it just read what JazzTimes had to say: “Weird, but this guy with the name Ed Johnson composes some of the finest Brazilian music in the world from his home base in Northern California. It just goes to show that the world-wide reach of the bossa nova style popularized by Antonio Carlos Jobim, Joćo Gilberto and Baden Powell has never lessened and infiltrates all corners of the globe. The joyful and romantic strains of bossa nova are what Johnson co-opts so well with his eight-piece Novo Tempo.” www.edbjohnson.com

Also on the bill is a new international jazz group called Crossing Borders. The group features the heralded Canadian jazz vocalist/pianist Jennifer Scott and S.F. Bay Area saxophonist Kristen Strom. The material ranges from Brazilian tunes to pop, jazz and original music. The combination of Jennifer's sultry perfectly pitched voice and brilliant piano chops combined with Kristen's melodious saxophone is exhilarating. Audiences respond to the special combination of Jennifer's voice and Kristen's horn, the superb musicianship and interaction with the rhythm section, and the musical connection throughout the band. These women are masterful musicians who inspire every time they play and you will be inspired too. There’s nothing like them out there! www.crossingbordersmusic.com

Born and raised in Moscow, Russia, Masha Campagne was immersed in Classical European tradition while studying cello and piano at the renowned Gnessin State Musical College. Diverse ethnic, cultural and a creative atmosphere in Moscow during her ripening years inspired her to learn to play guitar and sing. Along the way she found inspiration in her grandfathers’ love of jazz and his big band. “ The spontaneity and swinging energy of the music abducted my heart . . .” Campagne recalls. When she found her way to Brazilian music, she became hooked and so here we are today. Masha brought her international sound to the S.F. Bay Area in the early 1990’s and are we are glad she did. She is an extraordinary singer and has mastered the Portuguese language as well as the beat. “Happiness is a richly seasoned Brazilian singer … Masha Campagne … she reveals a deep, luxuriant voice that suggests the richest, darkest chocolate and the ripest, tartest blackberries” (Jazz Times) www.mashacampagne.com

The three artists will be backed by these wonderful instrumentalists: Scott Sorkin: Guitar; Rene Worst: Bass; Jason Lewis: Drums; Michaelle Goerlitz: percussion;John Worley trumpet, flugelhorn.
